Advanced U.S.-Based Writing plus Literature

An advanced IEW writing and literature course, this fun yet challenging class is to be considered college preparatory. I am assuming the students in the course have a familiarity with IEW’s basic structure and style, although we will review all elements at a rapid and advanced pace. To that end, I am requesting all prospective students submit a writing sample of one paragraph telling me about themselves for review. While the course itself has some grammar included within it, I will not be explicitly teaching grammar. If that is a weak spot for your student, please make certain it is addressed at home. Utilizing the new Advanced U.S. History-Based Writing Lessons, the student will quickly tackle all nine units of the IEW writing models, after which the traditional IEW checklist will be replaced as most elements of style will no longer have to be indicated, allowing focus to take place on more specific structures such as MLA format and content; argumentative, narrative, contrast, persuasive, and response to literature essays; and ultimately the college application essay. Required: Advanced U.S. History-Based Writing Lessons Student Text (available summer 2015) Janice Campbell’s American Literature (Pub. By IEW) IEW’s Student Resource Notebook (I believe this is included as a free download with the text) Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway The Gardener by Sarah Stewart (a children’s book) The Boy on the Wooden Box by Leon Leyson Helpful: IEW’s Writing Tools app (2 versions. 1 is free, the other includes the very helpful resource, A Word Right Now for a reasonable price.) A Writer’s Guide to Transitional Words and Expressions by Victor C. Pellegrino A Writer’s Guide to Powerful Paragraphs by Victor C. Pellegrino

Next week you will begin a research report about a Civil War era figure. You must choose the figure and collect at least three sources of information about him or her. Bring these sources to class next week. Don't choose long books. Encyclopedia articles, excerpts from your history book, Internet articles (not Wikipedia), and children's books will work best for this three-paragraph report.
